A History Of Ugliness

Monday, February 16th, 2009

The following is the artwork for the latest Man Plus album due the end of summer. I will post some updates when we finish the full layout. The album will be named A History of Ugliness and was partly inspired by an amazing art history book called On Ugliness by Umberto Eco. Jared and I had a series of ideas bouncing from coast to coast until we came up with the idea of having a series of collaged monster heads categorized on the forgotten shelves of an old biologist’s laboratory. I hope you enjoy, also I have heard a few of the rough cuts and the new music sounds as magical as ever.

Story of the Underground

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

I worked with David Jimison to help create the mood and wall paintings through a huge maze installed at Eyebeam in November 2008. Our idea was to help give people path finding symbols to help navigate themselves through the maze and also to help build a mythology around the labyrinth and the New York City underground.

Here are some images of the murals:

The party was a huge success, showcased another project with David and Jeff Crouse, BoozBot, and garnered praise from a number of media sources including the following:

The Gothamist
WNYC
Free Williamsburg

The murals were based off of a series of illustrations about a story I adapted from the Mayan myth of the Underworld.

Title page

Ouroboros, beginnings and endings

Two creatures disturb the god of the Underworld

The god of the Underworld resolves the disturbance

Centries later a woman eats fruit from the tree at the gates of the underworld

The woman gives birth to twins whom contain the spirits of the beheaded creatures

The twins grow up with the same playful spirit of their ancestors

The children play again outside the gates of the underworld and disturb the god.

The children are eatten by the god of the Underworld for being a menance

Yet to the astonishment of the god, one child hid in her sister's mouth and helped the twins escape doom

Once sliced open the god of the Underworld transformed into the heavens and the earth, creating the labyrinth below with his intestines

Here are some images of my Myth of the Dinosaur series, exploring my slight obsession with cranes, dinosaurs, despair, and childish imagination.
